Pumpkins and Mums: The Classic Fall Porch Pairing

September 12, 2026

Pumpkins and mums fall porch display

Ask ten people what fall porch decor looks like and most of them will say the same two words: pumpkins and mums. It's the pairing that shows up in almost every magazine spread and neighborhood porch tour for a reason: the colors work, the textures work, and together they read as "fall" in a way that pumpkins alone don't quite manage.

Why Pumpkins and Mums Work So Well Together

Pumpkins are all smooth curves and solid color. Mums bring texture, a rounder mounded shape, and a wider color range, deep burgundy, gold, rust, cream, that plays off whatever pumpkin varieties you've chosen. A porch with just pumpkins can look a little sparse at ground level; the mums fill in that lower layer and make the whole arrangement feel intentional instead of scattered.

Choosing Between Hay Bale or Potted Mums

Every AVL Pumpkins package includes a choice here: a hay bale as a platform for your pumpkins, or potted mums instead. Neither is the "right" answer, it depends on the look you're after. Hay bales add height and a rustic, farm-stand feel, especially nice for larger porches or wraparound steps. Potted mums add color low to the ground and work well on smaller porches or narrow entryways where a hay bale would eat up too much space. If you can't decide, picture your door from the sidewalk: if it already has strong vertical lines (tall porch columns, a tall door), mums balance that out; if the entry feels flat, a hay bale adds the height it's missing.

How Many Mums for a Porch Display

For a standard porch on either side of the steps, two to four potted mums per side is the range that reads as full without crowding the walkway. Smaller entryways (a single door, no steps) usually look right with just two, one on each side. Larger wraparound porches can take more, but at that point it's often about spacing them out with pumpkins between rather than clustering mums alone.

Skip the Multiple Stops

The usual version of this project means one stop for pumpkins, another for mums, maybe a third for a hay bale, then getting it all home and figuring out the arrangement yourself. Every AVL Pumpkins package already pairs the two, sourced from the same local Western North Carolina farms, and we arrange it on your actual porch instead of leaving you with a trunk full of loose plants to sort out.
